How the Math Works
The three shared costs — delivery fee, service fee, and tip — are pooled into one amount and split across the group in whole cents:
By order size (proportional): your share of the fees matches your share of the food. Order 60% of the total and you pay 60% of the fees.
Evenly: the fee pool divides by head count, same for everyone, whatever they ordered.
Either way, largest-remainder rounding guarantees the fee shares sum to the exact fee total — pooled once, so rounding cents can't stack up across three separate fees. The comparison line under the results shows how much money the toggle actually moves, and to whom.
A Worked Example
| Person | Order | Proportional | Even |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sam (sushi) | $45.00 | +$9.00 → $54.00 | +$6.00 → $51.00 |
| Riley (salad) | $15.00 | +$3.00 → $18.00 | +$6.00 → $21.00 |
| Both ways sum to | $60.00 | $72.00 | $72.00 |
The toggle moves $3.00 from Riley to Sam. On a $15.00 salad, that's a 20% swing — the quiet reason group orders breed resentment when fees get "split evenly real quick." The same dynamic shows up across every platform's fee stack; see every DoorDash fee, added up and what delivery fees actually pay for for what you're splitting in the first place.
