Tip Calculator With Split

The per-person amounts always sum to the exact total.

Pre-tax is the customary U.S. base.

How the Math Works

Three steps, all in whole cents. The tip is the tip percent times the base you chose; the default base is the pre-tax subtotal. The total is bill plus tax plus tip.

Each share is the total divided by your party size with largest-remainder rounding, so the shares always sum to the exact total. When the division isn't clean, one or two people pay a single cent more, and the calculator says how many.

Tipped on the after-tax total instead, the tip above would be 20% of $165.49: $33.10, or $2.70 more. Neither is wrong; the point is knowing which base you're using.

An even split is only fair when everyone ordered about the same. If one person had the $48 steak and another had soup, use the bill split calculator.

Questions

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
Customarily, before tax: the standard U.S. convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal — the price of the food and drinks, not the government's cut. Plenty of people tip on the after-tax total anyway (it's simpler off a receipt, and a touch more generous). This calculator defaults to the pre-tax base and lets you switch, so the base is always explicit rather than hidden in the math.
Why do some people pay one cent more than others?
Because most totals don't divide evenly. $100.00 across three people is $33.33 with a penny left over — so the calculator gives one person $33.34 and the shares sum to exactly $100.00. That's largest-remainder rounding. Calculators that just show "$33.33 each" are quietly a penny short.
What's a normal tip percentage at a restaurant?
For sit-down service in the U.S., 18–20% of the pre-tax bill is the going standard, with 15% at the low end and 25% for exceptional service. Counter service and takeout run lower. For the full picture by situation — servers, bartenders, delivery, groups — see the restaurant tipping guide and the 2026 tipping chart.
What if everyone ordered different amounts?
Then an even split is the wrong tool — the person who had a salad ends up subsidizing the steak. Use the bill split calculator instead: it splits by item, with tax and tip allocated in proportion to what each person actually ordered.
