The Delivery Fee Problem

When one friend pays for the whole DoorDash order, they front the delivery fee, service fee, and tip. Here's how to read the receipt and split it fairly.

The Math

An example five-person order.
Food
$127.00
Delivery Fee
$5.99
Service Fee
$19.05
Tax
$11.27
Tip, 20%
$25.40
Total
$188.71
$50.44 of that is fees and tip, all on one card.

Who Pays the Fees

Everyone Pays Separately
DoorDash splits the delivery fee evenly and the service fee by order size. Each person adds their own tip.
The Creator Pays
One card covers the food, tax, delivery fee, service fee and tip.
A Regular Order
Works the same way. One person pays for everything.
When the creator pays for everyone, here's where the money sits:
On the creator's card (all food, fees, and tip)
$188.71
Fees and tip (delivery + service + tip)
$50.44
Each person's share (if all five ordered alike)
~$38

If friends pay back only their food and tax, the creator absorbs about $40 of the group's fees and tip. That's roughly $10 for each of the other four people.

How to Split It

  1. 1 Find the order in your email from no-reply@doordash.com, or under Orders in the DoorDash app.
  2. 2 Copy the View Order link from the email, or tap Share in the app.
  3. 3 Paste the link in splitty and tap the faces on each item. Fees split in proportion to what each person ordered.

How DoorDash Group Orders Actually Work

When you create a Group Order, you pick how it's paid: you pay for everyone, or everyone pays separately. Then you share the link and everyone adds their food. The two options handle the fees very differently.

Everyone pays separately

  • Each person pays for their own items
  • Delivery fee: split evenly among participants
  • Service fee: split in proportion to each order
  • Tip: each participant adds their own

DoorDash divides the fees for you.

The creator pays for everyone

  • Everyone's food and tax
  • Delivery fee
  • Service fee
  • Tip
  • Any other fees on the order

One card covers the whole bill.

The split rule comes from DoorDash's Group Orders FAQ. The same FAQ says the payment choice can't be changed once the cart exists, and alcohol can't be added to a split billing order. DoorDash documents "Everyone pays separately" on its Business support pages and publishes no rule on which accounts get it, so it may not appear on yours.

A regular DoorDash order works like the second card: one person pays for everything. That's when someone ends up fronting the fees and collecting afterward, and it's the case this page is about.

Why DoorDash Works This Way

DoorDash's fee structure isn't designed to be unfair—it's designed for their business model:

  • Delivery fee goes primarily to the Dasher (driver)
  • Service fee goes to DoorDash for operating the platform
  • Tip goes entirely to the Dasher

These are per-order costs. On a regular order DoorDash sees one delivery to one address, so they all land on whoever pays.

"Everyone pays separately" is the documented way to divide them, and the creator has to pick it when starting the cart.

"I'll just put it on my card, it's fine."

How to Actually Split DoorDash Fairly

If you're starting a group order, "Everyone pays separately" avoids the problem. When one person has already paid, there are three ways to handle it:

1. Take turns paying

If you order DoorDash weekly with the same group, rotate who pays. Over time, the fees even out. Simple, but requires tracking.

2. Venmo the payer afterward

Everyone sends the payer about $10 for their share of fees. But research shows "I'll Venmo you later" has a ~30% decline rate per week. A week later, half the group has "forgotten."

3. Split the receipt properly

Import the DoorDash receipt into a bill-splitting app. Every item appears—including delivery fee, service fee, and tip. Assign who ordered what. Fees split proportionally. Send payment requests immediately.

How splitty Handles DoorDash Orders

splitty reads DoorDash receipts automatically. Here's how it works:

  1. 1 Paste your DoorDash receipt URL Find the receipt in your email (from no-reply@doordash.com) or in the DoorDash app under Orders. Copy the link.
  2. 2 Every item appears Food items, modifiers, delivery fee, service fee, tip—everything on the receipt shows up in splitty.
  3. 3 Assign who ordered what Tap each item and assign it to whoever ordered it. Shared items? Split them among multiple people.
  4. 4 Fees split proportionally Delivery fee, service fee, and tip distribute based on each person's food total. The $45 sushi person pays more fees than the $15 salad person.
  5. 5 Send Venmo requests Tap each person's name to send a Venmo (or Cash App) request with the exact amount pre-filled. 30 seconds, done.

Stop subsidizing everyone's delivery fees.

Questions

Why isn't DoorDash split payment showing up?
Split payment only appears when you create a Group Order and select "Everyone pays separately." Regular orders don't have this option—only Group Orders do. To create a Group Order: tap your cart, then "Start a Group Order."
Can I split payment on a regular DoorDash order?
No. DoorDash only allows split payment on Group Orders. For regular orders, one person pays the entire bill, then you split afterward using a tool like splitty.
Does DoorDash split the delivery fee?
Only on a Group Order set to "Everyone pays separately." DoorDash's Group Orders FAQ says the delivery fee is then split evenly among all participants, the service fee proportionally to each order, and the Dasher tip is applied per participant. On a regular order, or when the creator pays for everyone, one card covers the delivery fee, service fee, and tip.
How do I find my DoorDash receipt URL?
Two ways: (1) Check your email from no-reply@doordash.com and look for the View Order button. (2) Open the DoorDash app, tap Orders, select your order, and tap Share to copy the link.
What if the DoorDash page doesn't load in splitty?
Some DoorDash pages require login. Try copying the full receipt URL from your confirmation email rather than the app. If it still doesn't work, take a screenshot of the receipt and use splitty's camera instead.
What about DoorDash service fees?
Service fees appear as a separate line item in splitty. You can split them proportionally (default), assign to the host, or exclude them entirely—your choice.
Can I split a DoorDash order if everyone already paid separately?
Usually there's nothing left to split. Under "Everyone pays separately," DoorDash charges each person for their own items, an even share of the delivery fee, a proportional share of the service fee, and their own tip. splitty is for orders where one person paid: a regular order, or a group order where the creator paid for everyone.
