The delivery fee is not the tip
Tip 18-20% on Uber Eats for a typical order, or a flat $3-5 on a small one — and add a few dollars in bad weather or for a long drive. That is our recommendation, and here is the number underneath it: in UC Berkeley’s study of January 2022 trips, the median California delivery worker’s net pay before tips was just $5.93 an hour, and the tip is the one part of the bill you set yourself. Uber says couriers keep 100% of it.
You placed a $32 Uber Eats order. The app added a delivery fee and a service fee — two separate charges that both sound like they pay for the delivery — plus tax. Then the tip screen appears. You already paid for delivery, you think. So you hit “No Tip” and move on.
Picture what your courier earns on a delivery like that. Uber calculates the fare “based on the anticipated time and effort for that specific delivery, plus real-time factors in your area,” and the courier keeps 100% of any tip. The fees are a different thing. Uber’s 2026 US fee guide for grocery orders on Uber Eats says that on those orders the delivery fee goes to couriers (who pay a portion of it to Uber for services like payment processing and support), and that all but $0.10 of the service fee goes to the courier. But Uber sets those fees, not you, and neither one is a tip. The tip is the one amount on the bill that you choose for the person who drove to the restaurant, waited for your food, and brought it to your door.
A 2024 UC Berkeley Labor Center study analyzed 52,370 trips by 1,088 drivers across five major metro areas. In its net-earnings analysis — a 434-driver, 30,100-trip subsample that excludes DoorDash, whose data lacked shift times — California delivery workers’ median net earnings after expenses and excluding tips equaled just $5.93 per hour. With tips, that number rose to $13.62. Tips were not a small extra on top of the pay. They were a large share of it.

Is the service fee on Uber Eats a tip?
No. The service fee — like the delivery fee — is a charge Uber sets for the order, not a gratuity. Uber’s US fee guide for grocery orders says the service fee there is tiered by basket size, that $0.10 of it goes to Uber, and that the rest goes to the courier. It still is not a tip: you do not choose it, and it does not change with the service you get. The tip is the only line on your Uber Eats receipt that you set, and Uber says couriers keep 100% of it. So if you skip the tip because the fees already felt like one, you have left out the one part of the courier’s pay that is up to you.
